¡Hablemos español!

For the children participating in the Spanish FLES program, 2012 has gotten off to a wonderful start despite the cold outdoor temperatures at GBW. The Spanish word wall in the cafeteria is alive and full of vocabulary words that appear in the weekly “Spanish Word” contest. Children enjoy looking up and reading the words while having thier breakfast or lunch. They note the use of many cognates that relate to both English and Spanish. Upper grade students are competing with lower grade students for the weekly word of the week prize of the “Sombrero de la Sabiduria.

First graders have talked about the temperature and weather and can identify the seasons and months of the year. We are now talking about different members of the family.

Second graders can easily count to 100 by 5’s and have learned to tell time in Spanish as well as add and subtract different amounts of money using U.S. and Peruvian coins.

Third graders also reviewed telling time. They learned vocabulary related to simple machines and are mirroring in Spanish what they are learning in their English science lessons about Earth Cycles. They have worked on identifying sequence of events that occur in nature to include the phases of the moon in Spanish.

Fourth graders have talked about different modes of transportation and landforms found in both North and South America.

Fifth graders are also reviewing landforms as well as learning to use the past and present verb tenses.

It is a pleasure watching them all learn so much Spanish and connect Spanish to concepts learned in their grade level lessons. May we continue to have a ¡Felíz Año 2012!
