Physical Education - News That’s Fit to Print!

Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to announce the awarding of a Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) Grant from the U.S. Department of Education to the school division. The “Living Fit in Fairfax” project is a three-year grant program. The goal is to improve the health and fitness literacy of students by addressing needs revealed in the CDC School Health Index, Fairfax County Youth Risk Behavior Survey, and FCPS fitness data. The project will coordinate nutrition, fitness, and physical activity opportunities for K-12 students. This project is fitness based and supports student achievement of the Virginia Standards of Learning for health and physical education.

To meet grant requirements, this project includes project assessment measures. Project assessments include measures for daily physical activity, cardiovascular fitness levels, and nutrition. These measurements will be assessed through pedometer and activity logs, a 20-meter shuttle (PACER), and nutrition logs for schools involved in each year of the grant. Additional data collection includes fitness measures, knowledge assessments and surveys that may involve all students.

Community involvement is another component of the project that will assist with a focus on student activity levels outside of the school day. Supporting physical education programs, SACC and Neighborhood and Community Services will engage in fitness and nutrition activities for students in before and after school programs.

We are excited to be in the pool of first year schools that will participate in this project!  As the project begins, look for more information!

In fitness and health,

Ms. Lynk and Mr. MacMillin
